The objectives in 7th Grade Literature (reading) are to
create PROFICIENT READERS through the use of the
following skills:
• Using Existing or Prior Knowledge
- refer to personal experiences
- use knowledge of content, style and genre when reading
• Asking Questions
- ask about content, concepts, and outcomes
- create or design steps of inquiry
- question ideas and information presented
- question the author
• Drawing Inferences During & After Reading
- draw conclusions, predict outcome and / or events
• Make Connections

• Determine What is Important
- weigh the evidence
- set priorities
• Use Visualization
- create pictures in their mind
- use other senses when processing text, smell, touch, hearing . . .
• Monitor & Repair Comprehension Throughout Their Reading
- check and recheck predicitons, answers for meaning
- stop and reread for clarification
- read on to construct meaning
- examine evidence
• Synthesize Information During & After Reading
- monitor for meaning
- use parts to see the whole
- generate knowledge
- merge what is known with new information forming new ideas, perspectives,
or insights
