Beginner Band (BB)

Beginner Band (BB) is available to all 5th graders interested in learning a band instrument.

Students typically start learning their instrument during Summer Band (which starts during Summer School in June &/or in August).  HOWEVER, students are welcome to join band at any point (they just have to play catch-up with the rest of the group).

BB rehearses every Monday, Wednesday, & Friday morning from 10:30 - 11:00 AM.

BB students also have an individual or small group lesson (about 15 minutes) once per week.

BB students' grades are determined by their consistency.

Students succeed in band when they are consistent at

  • bringing their instrument to school for rehearsals & their lessons
  • practicing (ideally 20 minutes, 6 days per week)
  • participating in performances (1 per quarter)

Breakdown of each Grade Report (every 3 weeks):

Lesson Average (minimum of 2 lessons every three weeks, 50 points each)

Performances (200 Points each)

Rehearsal Grade (15 points per rehearsal)

NLBB has approximately 3-4 performance during the school year: the Fall Band Concert (FBC) in October; the Christmas Band Concert (CBC) in December; Solo & Ensemble (S&E) in March; the Spring Band Concert (SBC) in May.

All performances are required.  Please refer to the NL Band Attendance Policy for more details.  Please contact Mr. Meyer if you have any questions or concerns.

B = 89 - 80

C = 79 - 70

D = 69 - 60
